Letter: The U.S. may soon overtake the Philippines in one ignominious category

Protesters display a banner as former Philippine First Lady Imelda Marcos was ordered to appear to explain her side for not attending the promulgation of the graft charges against her Friday, Nov. 16, 2018 in suburban Quezon city northeast of Manila, Philippines. The world record for the greatest robbery of a government is held by Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos during their 21-year reign over the Philippines.

It is estimated they amassed $10 billion in personal wealth. Imelda is remembered for having over 3,000 pairs of expensive shoes. All of this occurred during an economic crisis in their country.

America is experiencing a competition for first place in this category. Our politicians play the stock market with inside information, our Supreme Court Judges accept lavish gifts, and our president directs massive government funding into his own accounts and the accounts of his donors to garner loyalty, while DOGE creates a weak diversion.

Hopefully, the citizens will rise, just like they did against the Marcos government corruption.

History tends to repeat itself. Let’s hope it doesn’t take too long.
