Letter: The Department of Education is a unifying force. Eliminating it affects the most vulnerable students.
(Haiyun Jiang | The New York Times) President Donald Trump signs an executive order that would diminish the Department of Education in East Room of the White House in Washington, on Thursday, March 20, 2025.
Children, I believe, are our nation’s greatest resource. The Trump axe has obliterated the U.S. Department of Education, which supported all children in public education.
This once unifying force protected children, adhered to the law and dispersed funding in systematic ways. Now these services are fractured with separate plans in 50 states and dispersed to other already reduced government departments. There is no plan for accountability.
Wealthy students in private schools are not affected by such a horrendous decision. The most vulnerable students are again most at risk. As a veteran educator I know from experience the necessity of the DOE. What to do? Contact your representatives and tell them to resist the closure of DOE. Volunteer at your local school. Attend congressional meetings and speak out for our children, our greatest resource.
