Letter: Thinking of Mike Lee, God’s punishment is indeed merciless and incomprehensible

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Utah Sen. Mike Lee, arrives for a speaking engagement at the Sutherland Institute on the University of Utah campus on Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2023.

Mike Lee’s latest foray into wielding religion to sneer at others is saying that flooding at Burning Man — a deluge that hasn’t happened in its previous 37 years — is “God’s judgment.” If there is a whiff of logic in this, surely he has reasons for other environmental catastrophes, because it’s easier than doing anything about their actual causes. Let’s start you off, senator.

Fires in Maui: God absolutely hates that anyone would dare live in paradise. He closed down the Paradise franchise over 6,000 years ago.

Earthquakes in Turkey and Syria: There’s a good chance they call their deity by the wrong name. We know how things are named is important to Him.

U.S. Northeast cold wave: It’s well-known that God prefers using fresh preserves over maple syrup on His pancakes. It was time to show a little wrath.

Flooding in Vermont: Bernie Sanders. ‘Nuff said.

Utah’s continuing disaster: We still don’t know why He sent an unnatural disaster to represent Utah in the Senate. But His punishment is merciless and incomprehensible.

Jim Hayes, Salt Lake City
