Letter: In Trump’s thrall, the American conservative movement cannot be reformed

(J. Scott Applewhite | AP Photo) A video is shown the committee claims shows Proud Boys in front of the Capitol on Jan. 6th, as committee members from left to right, Rep. Stephanie Murphy, D-Fla., Rep. Pete Aguilar, D-Calif., Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., Rep. Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif., Chairman Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., Vice Chair Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., and Rep. Elaine Luria, D-Va., look on, as the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol holds its first public hearing to reveal the findings of a year-long investigation, at the Capitol in Washington, Thursday, June 9, 2022.

At the recent hearing of the Jan. 6 House select committee, Rep. Liz Cheney (R, Wyoming) unequivocally stated: “I say this to my Republican colleagues who are defending the indefensible: There will come a day when Donald Trump is gone, but your dishonor will remain.”

There are 17 GOP representatives and senators who honored their oaths of office during former President Trump’s second impeachment. Only those 17 defended the U.S. Constitution against its chief domestic enemy.

The fact remains: You have to grab the vast majority of GOP senators and representatives by their ballots or there is not a snowball’s chance in a pizza oven that their hearts and minds will follow the preferences of the majority of citizens.

In the final analysis, the only good Republican is one who publicly resigns from the GOP and who, as a conscientious citizen, calls it out for having become the Trumpist Confederacy of Fascist Factions (TCFF).

America deserves an authentically conservative alternative to the Democrats, but the American conservative movement cannot be reformed from within the TCFF. Trump and his confederacy undermine both the rule of law and respect for our nation’s democratic institutions.
