Letter: A lesson from ‘The Beverly Hillbillies’

(AP file photo) This 1966 file photo shows, from left, actors Irene Ryan, Donna Douglas, and Buddy Ebsen in a scene from the television series "The Beverly Hillbillies."

In a 1965 episode of “The Beverly Hillbillies,” we learn that Granny, who fancies herself a doctor, has a secret cure for the common cold. At the end of the episode, Jethro brings a traveling pharmaceutical salesman to the Clampett mansion.

After hearing about Granny’s cold cure and announcing that he has the exclusive right to market it on the West Coast, he asks for the directions. Granny tells him, “Take one spoonful of cold cure, eat sensible, get lots of rest, and drink plenty of water,” to which Jed adds, “And in a week or 10 days, your cold will be gone.”

This is why properly designed drug studies are essential.

sltrib.com is now free to access — no subscription required. We made this decision because we believe access to trustworthy, independent news shouldn’t depend on what you can afford — especially as misinformation and AI-generated content continue to rise.

Free to read doesn’t mean free to produce. Our reporters show up every day to ask hard questions and hold powerful institutions to account. That work takes resources.
