Letter: Again, Republicans put party before country

(Evan Vucci | AP file photo) President Donald Trump signs the coronavirus stimulus relief package, at the White House in Washington, as from left, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Ky., House Minority Kevin McCarthy of Calif., and Vice President Mike Pence, look on, March 27, 2020.

When I saw that Republicans in the Congress are opposed to vote-by-mail, as has been proposed due to COVID-19, I wondered why anyone would not want to support it, as it obviously furthers voting rights.

Then I saw a study that said 80% of Democrats were afraid of the virus and 58% of Republicans were afraid of the virus.

Then I realized, more Republicans will supposedly go to a voting place than Democrats. Another example of party before country.

sltrib.com is now free to access — no subscription required. We made this decision because we believe access to trustworthy, independent news shouldn’t depend on what you can afford — especially as misinformation and AI-generated content continue to rise.

Free to read doesn’t mean free to produce. Our reporters show up every day to ask hard questions and hold powerful institutions to account. That work takes resources.
