Letter: Help the COVID-19 unemployed in Utah

(Kristin Murphy | Deseret News/pool) Gov. Gary Herbert speaks during a daily media briefing about COVID-19 at the Capitol in Salt Lake City on Wednesday, April 1, 2020.

As employers are forced to lay off their entire staff, Gov. Gary Herbert could be waiving the one-week waiting period for unemployment benefits and rush resources to help the Department of Workforce Services speed payments, as other states have done.

sltrib.com is now free to access — no subscription required. We made this decision because we believe access to trustworthy, independent news shouldn’t depend on what you can afford — especially as misinformation and AI-generated content continue to rise.

Free to read doesn’t mean free to produce. Our reporters show up every day to ask hard questions and hold powerful institutions to account. That work takes resources.
