Letter: We need Neighborhood Watch in schools

(Leah Hogsten | Tribune file photo) Former students, teachers, staff and members of the community gather at West Jordan Middle School in May 2019.

Who better to protect and ensure the safety of our children in our schools but their parents? With all the mass shootings going on in our country, our schools are at the top of the list for being a soft target for predators.

There is presently a patchwork of security protecting our schools. It encompassess little to none, or whatever the community can afford.

As parents, we cannot afford to let this continue. The time is now to act and begin to build a safety net to secure a safe environment in our schools.

The presence of a few volunteer parents and/or responsible individuals per school monitoring halls, grounds and doors could lessen the threats and increase the safety of our children. This is well deserved.

Neighborhood Watch works in our communities. Parent Watch can work in our schools.
