Letter: Everyone should be able to ride UTA for free

(Rick Egan | Tribune file photo) A UTA bus drives down 100 South in Downtown Salt Lake City on Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2019.

I was happy to read in The Salt Lake Tribune that the Board of Directors of the Utah Transit Authority is concerned about frequency of service instead of how to enhance their salaries and benefits.

A huge percentage of the increase in ridership has to do with providing free rides for Brigham Young University and University of Utah students. I would like to see this benefit provided to all riders in an effort to fill up those huge vehicles and reduce the number of cars on our highways.

Another issue for the board of UTA to consider would be providing benches as well as protection from the weather while waiting for the bus to arrive at the bus stop. At present, we are lucky to have a pole with a sign on it designating a bus stop. There’s nothing as unpleasant as standing by this pole in a snow bank with the wind howling and snow falling.

Improving the bus stops might in some small way contribute to further improvement in ridership.
