Letter: Government should back off of women’s bodies

(Rick Bowmer | The Associated Press) West Jordan Representative Cheryl Acton speaks during a news conference Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2019, in Salt Lake City. Republican lawmakers in Utah are proposing a pair of bills to restrict abortions, including a ban on the procedure after 15 weeks that would be among the strictest laws in the nation. Acton acknowledged that her proposed ban would likely be challenged in court, but she said concerns about second-trimester abortions make it worthwhile.

The Feb. 24 commentary from state Rep. Cheryl Acton regarding House Bill 136, her bill to further regulate abortion, put me over the edge.

I’m stunned that Acton is so dim and also so arrogant to think that she and the Utah Legislature know what’s best for Utah women, what “reasonable standards” are regarding gestation limits, what she is “comfortable” with concerning abortion, or what she and Gayle Ruzicka think “Utah should be all about.”

Acton stated that “no one really wants to talk about or think about abortion.” I beg to differ. I think about it, I want to talk about it and there are lots of other people like me. We think the government should back off of women’s bodies, respect women's privacy and quit thinking you can regulate our bodies.

Go do some important work. Quit restricting our rights to determine how and when we reproduce. We can and will make our own wise choices in these matters. Your comfort is not important.

Deborah Robertson, Salt Lake City
