Law enforcement removed “human remains” from Lake Powell last Friday. The identity of the victim remains unknown.
The Kane County Sheriff’s Office and the National Park Service responded on Aug. 14 after a group on a houseboat notified them about “possible” human remains, according to a news release.
Responders sent the remains to the Utah Office of the Medical Examiner for autopsy and possible identification. The case remains under investigation. The age of the remains and any identifying features were not provided.
The artificial lake, which stores water from the Colorado River, hit a modern record low this week due to the region’s persistent megadrought. Lake Mead has also sunk to historic lows, revealing at least four cases of uncovered human remains, such as jaw bones, since 2022, according to the Los Angeles Times.
