Letter: Hatch has no understanding or empathy

Leah Hogsten | The Salt Lake Tribune The Salt Lake Chamber honors Sen. Orrin G. Hatch as the 39th Giant in Our City, in honor of his service and professional achievement, Saturday, June 9, 2018 at Grand America Hotel.

As a proud Utah woman, I would like to know how it is Sen. Orrin Hatch can come to the conclusion that Brett Kavanagh’s accuser is “mistaken” without so much as ever meeting her or hearing her side of the story? Is that a concept they taught at the law school he attended — prejudging a witness before testimony or full investigation?

Very few victims of sexual assault don’t remember in detail their experience and the fear and degradation they experienced. Obviously, Hatch has no understanding or empathy for the alleged victim and is driven by political agenda rather than justice for all. That must make the female members of his family so proud.

He may be retiring, but many of the other good old boys on the judiciary committee are not and might need to remember that they represent the entire citizenry, not just the men.

sltrib.com is now free to access — no subscription required. We made this decision because we believe access to trustworthy, independent news shouldn’t depend on what you can afford — especially as misinformation and AI-generated content continue to rise.

Free to read doesn’t mean free to produce. Our reporters show up every day to ask hard questions and hold powerful institutions to account. That work takes resources.
