Letter: You’d rather be Russian? Really?

(AP Photo | Carolyn Kaster) IN this Aug. 2, 2018, photo, President Donald Trump is cheered as he arrives for a rally at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza in Wilkes Barre, Pa..

In a recent commentary, Eugene Robinson, Pulitzer Prize-winning writer for The Washington Post, noted that at the Trump rally in Ohio, two men in the crowd look defiantly at the camera, proudly displaying the slogan on their matching T-shirts: “I’d Rather Be a Russian Than a Democrat.”

I am old enough to remember and prefer the phrase “Better Dead Than Red.” For those who prefer being Russian to being a Democrat, “One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich” by Russian writer Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn should be required reading. If someone starts a GoFundMe account to raise enough money to buy those two gentlemen one-way tickets to Moscow, I will happily contribute.

Mr. Robinson maintains the GOP has lost its mind. I maintain it has lost its soul.
