Letter: Death penalty won’t bring victim back

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Christine Stenquist, speaking as a private citizen from Kaysville, relays her personal experience with the brutal murder of her sister and the family's decision not to pursue the death penalty. Rep. Gage Froerer, R-Huntsville, at right is sponsoring HB379, which would end the death penalty in Utah.

With the death penalty, the lawyers get rich, a murderer gets famous, survivors get nothing and the victim is still dead.

sltrib.com is now free to access — no subscription required. We made this decision because we believe access to trustworthy, independent news shouldn’t depend on what you can afford — especially as misinformation and AI-generated content continue to rise.

Free to read doesn’t mean free to produce. Our reporters show up every day to ask hard questions and hold powerful institutions to account. That work takes resources.
