On a night when Democrats were celebrating election victories, the Utah Senate Democrats called on one of their own, Sen. Kathleen Riebe, to resign.

The statement from the Democratic caucus, issued late Tuesday, said that an investigation into allegations of workplace discrimination and harassment found violations by the Cottonwood Heights senator and called for her to relinquish her Senate seat.

“The behavior is deeply unsettling and will not be tolerated,” Riebe’s five fellow Democratic senators said in a statement. The senators said they had voted Tuesday to expel Riebe from the Democratic caucus and called on her to resign immediately.

Riebe did not immediately provide a comment Tuesday night.

According to the Democrats’ statement, an investigation completed Nov. 2 found a “pattern of conduct towards others that was likely motivated by race, national origin or ethnicity,” as well as statements regarding employment decisions based on sexual orientation and “other protected characteristics.”

“We take matters of workplace harassment and discrimination seriously,” the statement read. “We have no tolerance for bias, aggressive behavior, or discriminatory practices.”

The caucus did not disclose any other specifics about what Riebe said or did.

Riebe is not up for reelection until 2028, but she made a brief run for Utah’s 1st Congressional District seat before dropping out and endorsing former Rep. Ben McAdams.

First elected to the Senate in 2020, Riebe was also the party’s nominee in a special election in 2023 to replace former Rep. Chris Stewart. She lost the race 57% to 33% to Rep. Celeste Maloy.

Riebe is an educator who trains teachers in rural school districts. She currently serves as the manager of the Senate Democratic caucus.

Born in Long Island, New York, Riebe said she moved to Utah 34 years ago to spend a year skiing and has stayed since. She has worked as a police dispatcher, driven dump trucks, spent a year as a wildland firefighter in Washington state and worked in an outdoor education program in Georgia.

The last Democrat to be pressured to resign from the body was Sen. Gene Davis, who stepped down before the end of his term in 2022 after his fellow Democrats stripped him of his committee assignments amid allegations of sexual misconduct.
