Republican Sen. John Curtis rips GOP, says party ‘abandoned’ conservative principles as Democrats take Senate control

Curtis said that “tonight’s shellacking should be a wake-up call,” while Utah’s other senator, Mike Lee, posted an AI video of the Titanic sinking as results came in.

Republican U.S. Sen. John Curtis, who was not on the ballot this year, published a Substack newsletter Tuesday night criticizing his own party amidst a dramatic blue wave, writing that the GOP has “abandoned the conservative principles that once defined us.”

The party, he wrote, has lost touch with its “core values” of “limited government, free trade, resolute diplomacy and global leadership, and fiscal responsibility,” and has let down new Republican voters in the process.

“Instead of finally seeing relief on prices after the reckless Biden years, they saw a hastily planned war disrupt oil markets. Instead of enjoying a restoration of order and integrity in our government, they read headline after headline of scandals, incompetence, and corruption,” Curtis wrote. “Instead of economic stability and fiscal prudence, they saw the public debt balloon past $40 trillion—leading to volatile markets.”

And though Curtis did not name President Donald Trump explicitly in his post, he criticized the president directly, writing, “Instead of peace through strength, they saw the leader of the free world side with Putin over a strategic ally.”

Curtis’s post came before any election results in Utah were posted, but after a series of significant Democratic victories across the U.S., as Republicans are projected to lose control of Congress.

“Tonight’s shellacking should be a wake-up call,” Curtis wrote. “We are losing good colleagues—people who served honorably and deserved better than to be swept up in the failures of our party as a whole. But if our response is to blame the media, the polls, or the voters, we’ll have learned absolutely nothing. We might start by looking in the mirror.”

Curtis, a former member of the U.S. House, will be up for reelection in 2030.

Utah’s other U.S. senator, Sen. Mike Lee, posted an AI-generated video of the Titanic sinking as Democratic victories rolled in across the country, writing, “Current vibes.”
