A female juvenile suspect was arrested early Saturday morning after police say she shot and killed her mother in Kanarraville.

In a press release posted to social media, the Iron County Sheriff’s Office said the shooting happened around 4:00 a.m. in the area of 400 South Main Street, where deputies responded to reports of a gunshot wound.

Once on scene, they found 45-year-old Maryellen Billings (also known as Maryellen Billings, according to the sheriff’s office), with a gunshot wound. She later died at the scene. The murder weapon is believed to have been a .380 handgun that was recovered at the scene.

The suspect, a 15-year-old girl, was taken into custody without incident. Since she is a minor, her full name has not been released.

In a statement sent to FOX 13 News, the Iron County School District said they are making counselors and other mental health professionals available to students starting Monday morning.
