Samantha MoilanenA large grass fire that sparked overnight was burning early Wednesday near the mouth of Weber Canyon in the Uintah and Highlands areas of Weber County.
The Dugway Fire started at around 3 a.m. and was estimated to have burned 15-20 acres. Firefighters said they had made good progress Wednesday morning on the fire’s east side.
While the fire’s forward progress has been halted, crews had not yet established a containment line around the blaze by 9:30 a.m., said Kelly Wickens, a public information officer for the Dugway Fire with the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands.

The fire has been mostly burning on private property near an industrial area, Wickens said. Crews saw 45 mph winds early in the morning but those began to ease, she said, and much of the remaining smoke has been coming from burning piles of debris and wood chips.
Just after 7 a.m., the South Weber Fire Department said the blaze was under control and did not pose a threat to South Weber. Uintah city officials said crews were planning to remain at the scene to mop up hot spots, and residents should expect to see smoke in the area throughout the day.
“Thanks to the rapid and professional response of the Weber Fire Department, crews were able to quickly gain control of the blaze and stop the immediate threat to our community,” city officials said in a Facebook post.
While officials said homes near Bybee Drive were in a zone where they could be threatened, no evacuations have been ordered. However, Wickens said some residents have been told they could preemptively leave if they choose.
Bybee Road was closed Wednesday morning, she said, and officials have asked the public to avoid the area while crews were working to contain the fire.
Smoke from the fire is impacting traffic on the U.S. Highway 89 corridor. Earlier in the morning, the Utah Department of Transportation closed northbound lanes of U.S. 89 at the I-84 junction, but traffic has since been reopened.

Power has been restored in the area after lines were shut down at the request of fire officials, affecting over 1,800 customers, according to Rocky Mountain Power.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Wickens said.
A fire in the same area in 2017 destroyed three homes and forced about 900 people to evacuate.
