Rainbow flags rippled through downtown Salt Lake City on Sunday, transforming streets into a sea of color as Utahns marched to celebrate Pride Month and the LGBTQ+ community.

The annual Pride parade kicked off at 10 a.m. near Temple Square, with participants and performers making their way through downtown in a vibrant procession.

The parade capped a weekend of Pride festivities organized by the Utah Pride Center, including a rally and march at the Utah Capitol on Saturday and the two-day Utah Pride Festival at Washington Square Park.

Marchers largely walked east along 100 South and then down 400 East, ending at the intersection of 300 South and 400 East.

The festivities came days after Gov. Spencer Cox quietly proclaimed June in Utah “Fidelity Month,” a designation that calls on Utahns to recommit to values including “faith, family and patriotism,” according to the proclamation.

The move mirrored similar efforts in several GOP-led states that have promoted alternative June observances rather than officially recognizing Pride Month.

Ahead of the weekend festivities, Chad Call, executive director of the Utah Pride Center, urged Utahns to show up and celebrate.

“Show the world your authentic self,” Call wrote in a Facebook statement. “It’s vulnerable, and it’s scary ... but there’s power and strength to be had in leaning into that authenticity. Strength that I wish more of our elected officials possessed.”
