Fire crews were battling a blaze at a commercial building Tuesday afternoon and evening that created a plume of smoke visible across Salt Lake and Davis counties.
The fire was at 369 S. Orange Street, near Redwood Road in Salt Lake City, according to the Salt Lake City Fire Department. The address is that of METech Recycling, which specializes in electronics and solar panel recycling, according to its website.
Capt. Chad Jepperson, a spokesperson for the Salt Lake City Fire Department, said the department received multiple calls around 3 p.m. and crews immediately responded to a fire that was burning both inside and outside of a concrete commercial structure.
Firefighters from multiple departments had largely extinguished the flames by about 7 p.m. on Tuesday, according to the Salt Lake City Fire Department, and crews were working to contain the smoke.
By about 9 p.m., the department wrote on X that there was no longer a danger to the public, though firefighters remained on scene monitoring conditions overnight.
Jepperson described the three-alarm fire as “dirty,” because multiple materials such as plastic may have been burning.
“There’s plastics, there’s oils, there’s all kinds of things in here,” Jepperson said, adding that people should avoid the area. Nearby residents and drivers passing through should keep their windows closed, he said.
(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) A warehouse fire at 369 S. Orange St. near Redwood Road created a plume of smoke visible around the Salt Lake Valley on Tuesday, May 19, 2026.
After battling the blaze for around an hour, Jepperson said, the fire was dying down. The structure was cleared of civilians, he said, and there were no injuries.
A public information officer with the fire department said earlier that pallets were burning near a building in the area, which is largely industrial.
Smoke from the fire was visible in downtown Salt Lake City and along Interstate 15.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Jepperson said.
