A 58-year-old man riding a bicycle was killed in the wreck.

(Salt Lake City Police Department) Officers block Redwood Road near 700 South following a fatal hit-and-run crash on Sunday, July 9, 2023.

The driver of an SUV who police say hit and killed a man riding a bicycle in Salt Lake City early Sunday has surrendered himself to authorities.

The 27-year-old driver is accused of plowing into a 58-year-old man on a bicycle at about 4:30 a.m. Sunday, near 755 S. Redwood Road, then driving away without stopping.

When officers arrived, they found the bicyclist injured on the ground. First responders provided medical attention, but the man died at the scene. He was identified Tuesday afternoon as Juan Mucino.

Police announced Tuesday that the suspect had turned himself in. After, investigators were able to locate the SUV they believe was involved in the fatal crash. No further information was released Tuesday.

Detectives are working with the Salt Lake County district attorney’s office “to file the appropriate charges,” police said. The Salt Lake Tribune generally does not name defendants unless they have been charged with a crime.

Correction • July 11, 5:30 p.m.: The story has been updated to correct the age of the man who was killed. Police originally said he was 59. Police also corrected the age of the suspect. They originally said he was 19.
