Utah ranks eighth in the nation for the number of open missing and murdered Indigenous women and children cases, according to a 2018 report from the Urban Indian Health Institute. However, UIHI notes the 25 cases in Utah are likely undercounted due to lack of reliable data regarding Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG).

In an effort to raise attention around the issue, May 5 is National Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Day.

Southern Utah reporter Alastair Lee Bitsóí joins the podcast to talk about the day, and what Utah is doing to honor the day and raise support for MMIWG.

And K-12 reporter Connor Sanders explains why some teachers and school staff rallied together at the Utah School District offices on Tuesday morning.

Hear all of these stories in the Wednesday, May 4, episode of ‘The Daily Buzz’ podcast. You can listen to both today’s episode and past episodes on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and SoundCloud.
