Woman arrested after man is shot to death in Taylorsville

A man was shot to death Friday night at the Atherton Park Apartments in Taylorsville, according to the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Department. A 21-year-old woman has since been arrested.

Victim Joey Michael Duran was found bleeding outside one of the apartment buildings, according to a probable cause statement. Officers found five bullet casings outside a second-floor apartment. When they went inside to look for more victims, they found a 21-year-old woman who came out from a bedroom.

The woman was taken to the Sheriff’s office. According to the probable cause statement, she was read her Miranda rights and agreed to answer questions. Detectives said she was caught in numerous lies and changed her story, according to the statement.

She originally said she had been babysitting when she heard shots, but later said she knew Duran and that he was her cousin, according to the probable cause statement. She said it was a coincidence that he was shot outside the apartment she was in.

According to the probable cause statement, a search warrant was obtained for her phone. Detectives searched the phone and said they found messages sent around the time of the shooting, including one saying the cops were there and that she was hiding in a closet.

The woman was arrested for alleged murder and obstruction of justice.
