One man is dead and another is in custody after what Roy police say was a homicide.

According to Roy police, the victim — Steve Bailey, 38 — was killed sometime on Saturday at a mobile home near 3800 S. Midland Drive. On Tuesday, police in Ogden were alerted when a passerby found Bailey’s body in an Ogden parking lot. The call came in as a “cardiac arrest,” but police believed the position of the body was suspicious. The medical examiner said the death was likely a homicide, caused by a gunshot wound to the head.

On Wednesday, a 48-year-old man was arrested at the mobile home where police say the man was killed. Police said Thursday that they believe Bailey had been arguing with suspect over money. Police allege that the suspect shot Bailey in the mobile home and then placed his body in Bailey’s car and drove it to “an obscure place” — the Ogden parking lot. He “never contacted the police, nor did he seek medical attention for the victim,” according to a probable cause statement.

There were apparently children in the home when the shooting occurred, but they are safe with their mother.

According to the probable cause statement, after providing “false information regarding his conduct” to police, the suspect “confessed to killing the victim.”

The suspect was booked into the Weber County jail for investigation of homicide, abuse or desecration of a human body, obstruction of justice and possession of a weapon by a restricted person. He is being held without bail.

The Salt Lake Tribune generally does not name suspects until they have been formally charged.
