Pleasant Grove police officers said Tuesday night they had taken a man into custody after an hourslong afternoon standoff.

Residents on 500 North between 500 and 600 East were ordered to shelter in place around 3 p.m. due to reports of a man with a gun. Traffic was also shut down in the area.

The city tweeted that there was “heavy police presence” in the area.

Capt. Britt Smith told The Salt Lake Tribune that the man exited a residence, fired multiple rounds from a rifle, pointed it at bystanders and then barricaded himself back inside the residence. Smith said no one was hurt when the man fired his rifle.

The Pleasant Grove Police Department posted on Facebook around 8:30 p.m. that the man had been safely taken into custody. As of 8:50 p.m., the shelter-in-place order hadn’t yet been lifted.
