Hatchet-wielding man charged in drive-thru rage incident

Utah man showed up after his girlfriend cut in line and another customer honked at her, police say.

A Utah man is facing felony charges after he reportedly suffered a case of fast-food drive-thru rage and threatened the occupants of a car with a hatchet.

According to West Valley City police, two men were in a car waiting at the In-N-Out Burger at 3715 S. Constitution Blvd. on Jan. 17 when a woman drove up and cut in front of them in line. The driver honked his horn and flashed his lights at the woman, who ignored him.

Shortly thereafter, a 37-year-old man pulled up next to the men and got out of his truck, carrying a hatchet, according to court documents. He yelled at the men and banged on the car window. The suspect broke the window and cut his hand, and he told the men, “It’ll be your blood next” before leaving.

The passenger in the car recorded video of the suspect on his cellphone, and a witness recorded the license plate of the suspect’s truck, which was located nearby. There was a bloody hatchet on the passenger seat and blood on the driver’s side door, according to police.

Police identified the owner of the truck, who came in for questioning several days later. He said he went to the In-N-Out because his girlfriend called him to say people were yelling at her.

He has been charged in 3rd District Court with two counts of aggravated assault, third-degree felonies; and one count of criminal mischief, a Class B misdemeanor.
