Police shooting in Millcreek forces lockdown at nearby school

A man died Monday afternoon after being shot by police in Millcreek.

Unified Police went to 56-year-old Marc Dominic Neal’s home about noon Monday when family members called to report a domestic dispute near 2400 East and Evergreen Avenue, said UPD Sgt. Melody Gray.

“Officers arrived and encountered [Neal] with a gun in the front yard," Gray said.

Police said they attempted to “de-escalate the situation for several minutes but shot Neal shortly after they arrived,” according to a news release.

Neal died at the scene. He was the son of the home’s residents and lived in a trailer on the property, Gray said.

West Valley City police are investigating the shooting, Gray said. Six UPD officers have been placed on paid leave because of the ongoing investigation.

Gray said she didn’t know what the man was doing leading up to or immediately before the shooting. She also said she didn’t know whether the man fired his gun.

Nearby Evergreen Junior High was locked down for a short time after the shooting, district officials reported. The school resumed normal operations about an hour later.
