Arizona boy, 15, dies at Lake Powell

A 15-year-old Arizona boy likely drowned Friday while visiting Lake Powell with a group of high school classmates.

National Park Service officials first received reports around 12:30 p.m. that the teenager, who was swimming at Swim Beach in the Wahweap District of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area near Page, Ariz., was missing and had likely drowned, according to a news release.

A dive team later recovered the boy’s body. He is the second person this week to have died at that beach, after 33-year-old Albert Shortman likely drowned there Sunday.

Officials haven’t released the boy’s name but said he was from Page, Ariz., and was visiting Lake Powell with classmates from Page High School.

The Kane County Sheriff’s Office, along with the National park Service and medical examiner, are investigating how the boy died.
