A semi-truck crashed into a Carbon County restaurant, causing minor injuries

A semi-trailer truck crashed into a Mexican restaurant Wednesday in Wellington, a small town in Carbon County, law enforcement officials said.

No one was seriously injured in the crash, which happened at about 6:30 a.m. Wednesday and collapsed the Los Jilbertos restaurant at Main Street (State Road 6) and Center Street in Wellington, the Wellington Police Department reported on its Facebook page.

Photos posted by Wellington Police and the Utah Highway Patrol show the walls of the one-story building caved in, and the roof touching the ground on one side.

People inside the restaurant escaped with only minor injuries, police said. Three people were treated at Castleview Hospital in Price, about 8 miles northwest of Wellington.

UHP troopers stationed in Price responded to the accident. They said the eastbound semi was going too fast for the snowy conditions, and drove off the road into the side of the restaurant.

UHP troopers reported that they found one of the restaurant’s owners outside the building, saying his wife was trapped inside. She was uninjured, and troopers entered the building and got her out.

At least one power pole apparently was damaged in the crash. Electricity and gas were shut off to the area while repairs are done. Because of that power outage, classes at Wellington Elementary School were not held.

One lane on State Road 6 was closed while police investigated, and Wellington residents were asked to stay away from the site. As the Wellington Police’s Facebook post put it, in a bit of understatement, “The business involved is obviously closed.”

A GoFundMe crowd-funding effort to rebuild the restaurant was launched Wednesday. By midday Thursday, it had attracted nearly $6,000 in pledges toward a goal of $25,000.
