Utah man found dead following domestic incident

Provo • A domestic incident in Utah started with gunshots and ended after authorities discovered the shooter dead.

Provo Police Detective Nick Dupaix says Richard Austin was identified as the shooter Sunday afternoon. Austin appeared to have died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound, but Dupaix says the Sunday morning incident remains under investigation.

Authorities say the incident began with an argument between Austin and a woman. The argument escalated and the woman says Austin fired a pistol into the floor and then says she heard two more gunshots.

Dupaix says the woman was not injured.

Police directed about 100 households to shelter in place for about four hours and asked the public to avoid the neighborhood.

Dupaix says police were not able to establish contact with Austin at any time during their response.
