Construction worker crushed under equipment at Sandy work site

A man who had been working at a construction site in Sandy died on Friday afternoon.

The construction crew was working on a commercial work site at 2:30 p.m. near 11450 South and 1000 East.

The man, 46-year-old Russell Andrews of Salt Lake City, had been in a ditch while the crew lowered a heavy concrete sewage pipe when the back hoe malfunctioned and dropped the pipe, crushing him, according to Sandy police Sgt. Jason Nielsen.

Other workers managed to get the pipe off of the man and tried to save him, but he was declared dead at the scene, Nielsen said.
