Hello, Eaters! Perch Coffee is a new Australian coffee shop at 1295 Miller Ave., Suite 6, in the Brickyard area of Millcreek. I visited last week and talked about cuppas, bikkies and Australian coffee culture with owner Adrian Dean and manager Christian Biddle.
The origin story: Dean comes from a tiny town in Australia called Bungendore, 40 minutes outside the capital city of Canberra (if you want to pronounce it like an Australian, say “can-bruh”). He has lived in the United States for 10 years, and moved to Utah during the pandemic. He met Arizona native Biddle as Dean became a regular at the bakery that Biddle was managing, and the two of them bonded over a love of specialty coffee. They opened Perch Coffee in March.

The vibe: Like the larger-than-life kookaburra painted by artist Chris Peterson on one of the coffee shop’s walls, people can land and perch for a while at Perch Coffee. It’s modern and light-filled, with the south wall almost entirely made up of windows. There are tables downstairs where you can linger over a cuppa, and a laptop bar upstairs where you can get some work done.
Italian and Greek immigrants to Australia after World War II brought coffee with them, and helped create a strong culture around coffee in their adopted land, Dean said. Australians will sometimes visit cafes three times a day, he said, adding that going to get coffee is an “all-day experience in Australia, and it’s not purely just convenience to get caffeine.” In Australia, coffee shops are community hubs, Dean said, and he wanted to create that experience for all the new people moving to Brickyard.

The menu: Australian drinks like the flat white, Magic, and Mont Blanc, which is an interesting mix of orange juice and cold brew. Perch Coffee serves pastries from Forty Three Bakery, Dough Lady (famous cinnamon rolls!), Bondi Bikkies (“bikkie” means “biscuit,” which is Aussie for “cookie”) and Sagato Bakery & Cafe. To read about my order, scroll down to “Drink & Pastry of the Week.”
The hours: Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Live deliciously,
Kolbie

Drink & Pastry of the Week
(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) A Sugar & Spice latte (chilled), and a Lamington cake at Perch Coffee.
When I visited Perch Coffee, I enjoyed a Sugar & Spice latte with a quintessentially Australian cake called a lamington.
The Sugar & Spice latte was exactly how it sounds, mildly sweet and deliciously spiced, with notes of cardamon, cinnamon and vanilla bean. Unless you specifically request ice, Perch Coffee shakes its iced coffees in a cocktail shaker for an iceless, chilled drink that’s creamy and cold but doesn’t contain melting ice cubes. That’s how I had my latte, and I loved it. (The owner told me this idea came from a place in San Diego called Goldchild Coffee Roasters.)
And OK, I’m obsessed with lamingtons now. This is a square of vanilla-flavored sponge cake that’s iced on all sides with a thin layer of chocolate, then the whole thing is coated with coconut. It’s light and delicately sweet, and a lot more moist than I was expecting. Just the perfect thing to go with a cup of coffee.
