Utah’s Irish community is one of the smallest in the country, according to U.S. News and World Report, with only 5.9% of Utahns claiming Irish heritage. But when St. Patrick’s Day rolls around, that doesn’t stop Utah’s Irish from showing their green-and-orange pride.

Salt Lake City’s annual St. Patrick’s Day parade is one of the biggest in the state — not far behind the Days of ‘47 Parade and the Utah Pride Parade. And several bars and restaurants celebrate the holiday with special events. Here’s a roundup of St. Patrick’s Day-themed events around Utah on or ahead of St. Patrick’s Day on Tuesday, March 17.

St. Patrick’s Day parade and siamsa

The 49th annual St. Patrick’s Day parade is set for Saturday, March 14, starting at 11 a.m.

The parade route starts at the intersection of 600 West and 200 South, then runs east along 200 South to Rio Grande Street. The parade continues north on Rio Grande, through The Gateway shopping center, concluding at 50 North.

The Hibernian Society of Utah, which mounts the parade every year, has chosen the theme this year of “A Celtic Odyssey.” The theme, the society says on its website, “celebrates “the idea of an epic journey/adventure which symbolizes the travels of Irish immigrants, and the cultural exchange between Ireland and the United States over the years.”

The route through The Gateway takes parade participants through the Olympic Plaza, where the annual siamsa (pronounced shee-am-sah), or Celtic festival, runs through 5 p.m. The siamsa will feature food, drink, vendor booths and live entertainment — featuring Irish bands and dancing.

Admission to the parade and siamsa are free; there is a charge for food and drink. All alcohol must remain within the plaza’s perimeter. For a full parade and siamsa schedule, visit IrishInUtah.com.

Salt Lake City doesn’t host the only St. Patrick’s Day parade in Utah. In Price, about a two-hour drive southeast of Salt Lake City, the city is hosting its 44th annual St. Pat’s parade, starting at noon on Main Street. It’s free to attend or participate. Desserts for the holiday

Park City Desserts • 401 Main St., Park City, 435-922-0059; parkcitydesserts.com. • The dessert shop has some St. Patrick’s Day-themed delicacies, including a matcha panna cotta and a Bailey’s panna cotta.

Pinkbox Doughnuts • 610 W. Main St., American Fork, and 938 E. St. George Blvd., St. George; pinkboxdoughnuts.com. • The Vegas-based doughnut company has a collection of Irish-themed flavors from Friday through Tuesday, March 13 to 17. They include the “Pot O’ Gold” (blue frosting, topped with gold sprinkles and a sour rope rainbow), the “Lucky Charm Bar” (a green-frosted bar with Lucky Charms cereal, on a stick) and the “Irish Unicorn” (white-frosted pink velvet cake topped with a unicorn and St. Patrick’s decor).

Green beer and beyond

The Irish pub that tends to go all out for St. Patrick’s Day is Piper Down, at 1492 S. State St., in Salt Lake City. (Their phone number is 801-468-1492, and their website is piperdownpub.com.) Piper Down has events planned for March 13, 14 and 17:

• Friday, March 13, Piper Down will start its “Countdown to St. Patrick’s Day,” with Celtic punk band Murphy and the Giant playing live, starting at 9 p.m.; cover is $5.

• Saturday, March 14, the pub will hold its annual St. Practice Day party, noon to 12:30 a.m., with a music lineup starting at 3 p.m. that includes Folk Hogan, Sean Baker’s Recycled Stardust, Red Headed Step Twins, Callanish and Heathen Highlanders.

• Tuesday, March 17, St. Patrick’s Day, the pub will offer food and drink specials, 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Live music starts at noon with Red Headed Step Twins, followed by Finch and the Magpies at 3 p.m., Swagger at 6 p.m., Murphy and the Giant at 9 p.m., and the Heathen Highlanders playing between acts all day.
