A bakery that makes sweet and savory pocket pastries known as kolaches is opening its long-awaited new location on a busy corner in Salt Lake City’s Sugar House neighborhood this week.

Hruska’s Kolaches is having a “grand re-opening” Tuesday at its new location, 1751 S. 1100 East, the bakery announced over the weekend on its Instagram account. Hours are 6:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

For Tuesday’s opening, the announcement said, the first 100 customers who show up between 6:30 and 7 a.m. will get a free “surprise” Kolache Card, with a value of up to $130. The bakery also said it will hand out a free sweet kolache to everyone who visits during the day.

The Salt Lake Tribune reported last April that Hruska’s had signed a lease for the property in 2023, but waited on moving in while the company was building out a new location in Orem.

The location has been home to several food businesses over the last 15 years: Mini’s Cupcakes from 2011 to 2014; Karma Coffee House from 2016 to 2017; Poppies Bakery & Cafe from 2017 to 2018; and most recently the late-night bakery Brownies! Brownies! Brownies! from 2018 to 2022.

Hruska’s closed its old Sugar House location, at 2030 S. 900 East, after business hours on Saturday and spent the weekend finishing the move, the Instagram post said.

The new location required extensive renovation, the Hruska siblings who own the business told The Tribune in April. The Hruskas filed permits for a fire sprinkler system and mechanical, plumbing and electrical work. Among the changes to the building: A 250-square-foot addition, and a patio where customers can sit and enjoy a kolache.

In addition to the new Sugar House location, Hruska’s Kolaches has locations in West Jordan, American Fork, Orem and Provo.
