Hundreds of people marched through downtown Salt Lake City on Thursday evening, to protest the Trump administration’s handling of undocumented immigrants.

What was billed as an “emergency protest” started at Washington Square Park, at Salt Lake City Hall, at 6 p.m., and culminated with protesters marching north on State Street to the Bennett Federal Building. Some chanted “No more ICE,” referring to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

When a counter-protester wearing a t-shirt supporting President Donald Trump tried to interrupt the Washington Square Park event, protesters in safety vests encouraged others to ignore the interruption and to stay peaceful. Law enforcement officers — who kept a small, uniformed presence at the event — helped separate the protesters from the counter-protester.

Organizers said Thursday’s event was done in solidarity with those protesting ICE raids in Los Angeles. Those protests prompted Trump to mobilize some 4,000 National Guard troops to L.A., over the objections of California’s Gov. Gavin Newsom. A judge has ruled the mobilization unconstitutional, though his ruling has been stayed pending appeal.
