Utah defensive tackle Jamal Wallace has been “indefinitely suspended” from the football program, a Utah athletics spokesperson confirmed, following his arrest last week after a woman reported that he raped her and shared videos of the assault on her Snapchat account.
Wallace was not arrested on suspicion of a sexual assault charge but instead for allegedly distributing intimate images, which are misdemeanor counts. He denied sexually assaulting the woman during a police interview, according to an arrest document, but allegedly told an officer he had accessed her Snapchat account to see whom she had been talking to.
He has not been formally charged as of Wednesday evening.
“We were made aware of the situation with Jamal Wallace on Oct. 11, and he was immediately placed on an indefinite suspension from the program,” the Utah athletics spokesperson said. “We take these matters seriously. As this is a pending legal matter, we have no further comment at this time.”
Wallace did not immediately respond to a request for comment. He was released from jail after posting $5,000 bail.
A woman reported to Salt Lake City police that Wallace was her “off-and-on dating partner,” and she had met him on Oct. 9 to talk about their relationship, according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by The Salt Lake Tribune. She alleged that Wallace instead forced her to engage in various sex acts and, at one point, grabbed her cellphone and told her he wanted to change the music that was playing.
But after he left, the woman told police she realized that Wallace had allegedly taken a video of himself having sex with her on her phone, according to arrest documents, and sent it to five people whom she had been talking to on Snapchat.
After seeing the videos, the probable cause affidavit states, the woman told police she felt “confused and disgusting,” and had a sexual assault examination done.
Wallace allegedly told an officer that when he went into the woman’s Snapchat account, he became upset when he saw that she had been messaging other men.
An officer wrote that he looked through the woman’s messages and saw Wallace had recorded “two sexually explicit videos involving himself and the victim.”
Wallace transferred to the Utes from Tennessee this offseason. He appeared in one game this season before his suspension.
