In a post made on Utah’s Crimson Club X account, four Utah donors posed with their hands making the signature “U” insignia as they walked off the plane in Ames, Iowa.
But it was another person who caught the attention of Ute fans.
Behind them, walking down the steps of the plane, was Ronald A. Rasband, an apostle of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
For Utah head coach Morgan Scalley, who is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, that was a special guest to have on Utah’s first road trip of the season.
“[It was] fantastic,” Scalley said. “All our guys — I educated them on who he is. Obviously, our LDS players know who he is. But just to have his presence — it was fun catching up with him. He’s an Olympus High grad. He’s a University of Utah guy. He’s just a humble servant, and our guys loved it.”
Rasband attended Utah’s business college in the 1970s but left before he graduated after Jon Huntsman Sr. offered him a senior marketing position at Huntsman’s company.
He received an honorary degree during the school’s commencement ceremony this year.
“To receive this recognition from my alma mater feels like a tender, full-circle blessing for which I am profoundly grateful,” Rasband posted on Instagram. “The counsel I shared with the graduating class applies to each of us: love your fellow man and look for the good in others.”
But that doesn’t mean Rasband only has eyes for Utah athletics.
The trip to Ames wasn’t the first time Rasband has made an appearance at a college football or basketball game — far from it. He was even seen on camera celebrating Legend Glasker’s one-handed grab during BYU’s win at Colorado State.
As for Rasband’s Utah trip, Scalley said he didn’t know the details of how it all came about, but added, “We were just happy to have him.”
