Morgan Scalley doesn’t let many visitors into Utah’s fall camp practices.
But he made one recent exception: one of his own former coaches.
And you’ve probably heard of him.
Urban Meyer, who coached the Utes for two seasons before going on to national prominence at Florida and Ohio State, stopped by to watch his former pupil’s first fall camp as Utah’s head coach. And then addressed the team.
So what message did he give the Utes?
“If you want to be elite, you have to become elite at the hard things,” Scalley said, relaying Meyer’s message. “If you’re a wide receiver, the number one thing they wake up to is not ‘I can’t wait to go block.’ They want to catch touchdowns.
“It’s about understanding what [they’re] asked to do and focus on that every single day. If [they] can master the hard, [they’re] much more of a complete player.”

That message, Scalley said, resonated with him — especially coming from Meyer, who knows a thing or two about building elite football teams.
Meyer spent two seasons at Utah from 2003-04, going 22-2 and taking the Utes to unprecedented heights. In 2004, Utah famously became the first team from a non-BCS conference to earn a BCS bowl bid.
Now, more than two decades later, Meyer is watching Scalley try to build the next chapter of Utah football.
“Coach Meyer obviously knows how to win football games,” Scalley said. “He knows how to motivate football teams. [I have] nothing but love for him.”
