Utah Royals FC defender Rachel Corsie makes Women’s World Cup roster for Scotland

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) Utah Royals host Orlando Pride at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Wednesday May 9, 2018. Utah Royals FC defender Rachel Corsie (2) and Utah Royals FC defender Becky Sauerbrunn (4).

Utah Royals FC defender Rachel Corsie was named to the Scottish national team roster for the FIFA Women’s World Cup, the club announced Wednesday. Her addition to the team was widely expected.

Corsie will play in Utah’s match against the North Carolina Courage on Sunday before joining the national team. Scotland will play Jamaica on May 28th prior to traveling to France.

It will be the first-ever World Cup bid for Scotland. Corsie, who is the captain of the team, said before the Royals season that there is a new expectation on Scotland now that it will compete on the world stage.

“It’s a great group of players,” Corsie said. “It’s really enjoyable at the moment to be able to be a part of that — not just lead it.”

Corsie said recently that it is the biggest moment of her career just to have the opportunity to be on the roster.

“I just think it’s one of those one-in-a-lifetime moments,” Corsie said.

Scotland’s women’s team has had to fight for recognition and support over the past decade, Corsie said. But she’s been encouraged by the recent growth and development of the national team.

“I think it’s just been really special and enjoyable and exciting,” Corsie said. “I think that’s something that it should be. You’re going to the World Cup and you should be able to enjoy those moments and be able to reap the benefits that it brings.”
