The Utah Jazz are moving on from another former lottery pick.
Utah is acquiring veteran wing Josh Green and cash from the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for wing Cody Williams and shooting guard John Konchar, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
The Jazz selected Williams with the No. 10 pick in the 2024 NBA draft, but after two seasons in Utah, the team is moving on from the 21-year-old.
Green gives the Jazz a bigger, more experienced wing who has established himself as a capable 3-point shooter. He shot 42% from 3-point range last season and has made 37.4% of his attempts from deep over his career.
Green is entering his seventh NBA season after spending his first four seasons with the Dallas Mavericks and the last two with Charlotte. He was traded to Minnesota in June as part of the deal that sent LaMelo Ball to the Timberwolves.
The Jazz acquired Konchar from Memphis in February in the trade that also brought Jaren Jackson Jr. to Utah. That trade also marked the end of Taylor Hendricks’ time with the Jazz less than three years after Utah selected him with the No. 9 pick in the 2023 draft.
Williams struggled to find his footing in Utah. He averaged 8.8 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists last season while shooting 46.8% from the field and just 21.4% from 3-point range.
Moving on from Williams signals the Jazz weren’t willing to wait for him to develop as they look to become more competitive. The deal gives Utah a more experienced wing while also opening a roster spot as the Jazz pursue a playoff spot.
But there could be more to it than that, too. Green is on an expiring $14.7 million contract, which gives the Jazz another sizable salary to use in a future trade.
