Phoenix • Suns’ star Devin Booker says he will make sure that doesn’t get caught up in a one-on-one duel with Jazz rookie guard Donovan Mitchel when Utah visits here Friday night.
But that doesn’t mean the Phoenix Suns star isn’t aware of Mitchell, his accomplishments, his standing around the league, or the great season he’s having.
Like many players watching Mitchell’s rookie run, Booker has become a fan. He’s watched from afar, and has become an admirer.
“We belong to the same agency,” Booker said. “When Donovan was going through the pre-draft process, everyone said to watch out for him and that he’s going to be good. He’s really good. I’m anxious to play against him.”
The Jazz and the Suns will face each other for the second time this season, and when they do, Booker will be facing a different Mitchell. Back in October, Mitchell was still coming off the bench. He was still trying to find his way through the NBA, still figuring out his role.

Now, Mitchell has won rookie-of-the-month for the second consecutive time. He’s firmly thrust himself into the rookie of the year race that was once Ben Simmons’ to win. He’s now one of the best young players in the NBA.
Booker is in his third season, but he’s in a similar realm. He’s Phoenix’s best player, a shooter, scorer and playmaker wrapped into a neat package. His competitiveness belies his baby face. Like Mitchell, he’s an assassin on the floor, capable of running up video game-type numbers when he gets hot.
He shook his head vehemently when asked about locking into a duel with Mitchell. Booker wants to make sure it’s about the Suns and Jazz. At the same time, it stands to reason the winner on Friday will greatly depend on which young guard can put his imprint on the game the most.
“We’re both young in this league,” Booker said. “I’ve been watching from a distance, and I’ve always been a fan of his game. He’s gotten his opportunity and he’s run with it. He’s a tremendous talent.”
