Eye on the Y: BYU’s ‘College GameDay’ broadcast location is set. Now, who will be the guest picker?

There really is no shortage of celebrities with BYU connections.

Provo will be at the center of the college football world Saturday when No. 8 BYU hosts No. 2 Notre Dame.

ESPN’s “College GameDay” will be on campus for the game — and now we know the exact spot.

The popular pregame show will broadcast from the lawn at Heritage Halls on the east side of the BYU campus.

That’s a change from previous pregame shows.

The west parking lot of LaVell Edwards Stadium has been the usual location for these events (both Fox’s “Big Noon Kickoff” and “GameDay” have broadcast from there previously). The green space around Heritage Halls will no doubt feel a bit more like a traditional college campus.

But there’s another thing that still needs to be settled: the guest picker.

From former players to musicians to even a popular game show host, there’s no shortage of celebrities with BYU connections.

Here’s who we think could — or at least should — get the spot:

Rudy Ruettiger

Yes, that Rudy. The very same one from “Rudy.” We know, we know — Rudy is a Notre Dame guy. Heck, at this point, he might be the most well-known Notre Dame guy.

But funny enough, he’s also a Latter-day Saint guy. And maybe even a BYU guy now?

Ruettiger converted to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 2017 and has said that he’s been impressed with what BYU coach Kalani Sitake has done with the Cougars.

Steve Young

Young is a Cougar legend and a former ESPN analyst.

On paper, it’s a perfect fit (not to mention Young was pretty dang good on TV, too).

The one potential hiccup: Is there any beef between Young and ESPN after the network laid him off in 2023?

Jimmer Fredette

It’s been 15 years since Jimmermania swept the nation, and he still can draw a crowd — not that Saturday’s event will need any help with that.

Ken Jennings

The legendary “Jeopardy!” contestant turned host double-majored at BYU before becoming a household name.

And Disney, which owns ESPN and ABC, is one of the game show’s partners.

Plus, it might be fun — or at least different — to see Jennings get some answers wrong for a change. Or maybe he’d just be perfect in his picks, too.

Brandon Sanderson

Or maybe ESPN goes a different route and chooses Jennings’ former BYU roommate: Brandon Sanderson.

The best-selling Utah author might even attract a different audience than those who usually watch “GameDay.”

But maybe not all that different. After all, San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama is a big fan of Sanderson.

Rylee Arnold

Can you say synergy?

The Provo native is currently a ballroom pro on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars,” and she’s dating BYU tight end Walker Lyons.

Ryan Smith

The owner of the Jazz and Mammoth seems to really like the national spotlight and selling his vision of Utah. He’s also a regular guest on “The Pat McAfee Show.” It wouldn’t be a surprise to see him join his buddy Pat on “GameDay.”

Other options: Andy Reid, Fred Warner, Taysom Hill, Danny Ainge ... the list gets pretty long.

Bear’s other blue team?

At one point, Bear Bachmeier may have felt some pressure to cheer for Notre Dame.

And at least one member of his family wouldn’t have been sad if he was suiting up in the Notre Dame Blue and Gold this weekend.

“My grandpa is actually a diehard Notre Dame fan,” said Bachmeier, who grew up Catholic. “But I’m a Coog. … Go blue, let’s go.”

Except it wasn’t always BYU blue.

“I was kind of a Boise State fan because I played NCAA and I’d always set the field to the blue field.”

Then his older brother Hank ended up at Boise State, further cementing his fan status — for a time, at least.

As for Notre Dame, Bachmeier said the Irish recruited him, but his grandfather’s allegiances clearly didn’t sway him.

That was good news for BYU.
