Why BYU QB Bear Bachmeier has country singer Luke Combs to thank for the Cougars’ comeback

How did Bear Bachmeier cope with the pressure of a comeback win? He sang to himself on the field.

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) BYU Cougars quarterback Bear Bachmeier (47) as BYU hosts Utah, NCAA football at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2025.

BYU freshman quarterback Bear Bachmeier is known as a guitar-strumming gunslinger for the Cougars.

So it might be fitting how the signal caller dealt with a 14-point deficit on the road Saturday afternoon.

“I don’t know, I like to sing songs to myself,” Bachmeier said. “... I like listening to the songs that they are playing [in the stadium]. I saw Luke Combs came [to Iowa State] to play. So I was singing ‘Hurricane’ and ‘Fast Car’ that was on. Yeah.”

Bachmeier accounted for over 350 yards to storm back to beat ISU 41-27. BYU outscored the Cyclones 31-3 after being down 24-10.

“Just chill. I mean, it’s a game. It’s nerve-racking, but I know the guys have my back,” Bachmeier said of dealing with the pressure he faces as quarterback. “... I like to stay within myself. My family is in the stands. You just have to play the game. You don’t want to get too frightened. Down 14, but you trust the guys next to you.”

BYU is 8-0 and has a clear path to the Big 12 title game. It will go on the road to play Texas Tech in two weeks.
