Planning on attending a BYU Football game this fall? Here’s what you need to know.

The plan is still to have full capacity at games, but BYU will continue to monitor the situation.

(Leah Hogsten | The Salt Lake Tribune) as Brigham Young University takes on Idaho State, Saturday, Nov. 16, 2019 at LaVell Edwards Stadium.

Although infections and hospitalizations due COVID-19 continue to rise around the state and across the nation, BYU football plans to go ahead with its previously announced plan of having full capacity at LaVell Edwards Stadium this fall. At least at this point.

BYU recently announced a campus-wide mask mandate, which will be enforced in classrooms, any indoor space where physical distancing isn’t maintained and any other areas where directed.

So, what does that mean for any fans wanting to attend LaVell Edwards Stadium?

Most fans will not be required to wear a mask — at least those seated outside. Only fans that have tickets for inside the loges will be required to wear a mask.

“Consistent with current Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and BYU requirements, BYU Athletics will require masks in indoor venues when physical distancing isn’t maintained,” a BYU football spokesperson said.”This includes a requirement for those attending indoor athletic events, such as volleyball in the Smith Fieldhouse and inside the Loges at LaVell Edwards Stadium. Wearing a mask will be required for entry to indoor BYU venues. Masks will not be required for outdoor BYU venues.”

However, the spokesperson also said that the university will continue to monitor the situation and will reevaluate at the end of September. The university will look at the immunization rate of the campus community, COVID-19 transmission and hospitalization rates and guidance from health and government officials to see if any changes have to be made.

Along with plans of full capacity, LaVell Edwards Stadium will see the return of tailgating, which takes place directly south of the BYU OIT building and east of Baskin Robbins on 55 E 1230 N (Bulldog Ave) Lot 18.

The lot, which Is first-come, first-served, will be available starting at 8 a.m. on home game days and will close two hours after the game ends. The full list of what vehicles and what type of cooking is allowed is available on tickets.byu.edu/lavell-edwards-stadium.

For those attending the game, the stadium has a no bag policy. Only small clutch bags, no larger than 5″x8″x1″, with or without a handle or strap, are allowed into the stadium.

Food and drink are also not allowed into the stadium, and the use of alcohol and tobacco (including e-cigarettes) are prohibited on campus.
