The Utah Royals can’t solve the San Diego Wave.

The host Wave beat the Royals 4-2 in an NWSL game on Friday night, getting a fast start and improving to 6-0-0 all-time in the series between the teams.

The outcome left Utah and San Diego with 11-7-3 records, with the Royals sitting in third place on goal differential.

San Diego scored the opening goal in the fourth minute, with Trinity Byars receiving a long pass from Melanie Barcenas, racing toward the Utah goal and scoring past Utah goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn.

Utah equalized in the 29th minute when Kate Del Fava sent a long pass into the 18-yard box, Cece Delzer tapped the ball back to Mina Tanaka, and Tanaka fired it into the net.

San Diego regained the lead in the 40th minute when Barcena scored to make it 2-1.

Utah’s Tanaka evened the score in the 47th minute, notching her second goal of the game.

But Utah had no answers for the Waves’ next two goals. Byars got her second goal of the game in the 63rd minute, and Brazilian forward Ludmila added an insurance goal in the 70th.

Utah is scheduled to return to action at Orlando on Saturday, Aug. 29 (5 p.m. MDT, KMYU, NWSL+).
