The NWSL’s monthlong summer break appears to have derailed the Utah Royals.

After entering the break on a 10-game unbeaten streak, the Royals lost their second straight match on Friday, falling 3-1 to Gotham FC at America First Field in Sandy.

Coming off a 3-2 loss at Chicago last week, the Royals struck first against Gotham FC. Utah’s Cece Delzer made a run and received a perfect pass from Kiana Palacios, scoring to give Utah a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute.

But Gotham FC responded quickly, with Esther Gonzalez scoring an equalizer in the 26th minute.

Gotham took a 2-1 lead with Tierna Davidson’s goal in the fifth minute of first-half stoppage time.

Gonzalez added her second goal of the game in the 70th minute to make it 3-1.

With the win, Gotham (7-3-3) moved past Utah (7-4-3) and into fourth place in the standings. Both teams have 24 points, while Gotham FC has a 7-5 edge on goal differential.

Utah is scheduled to return to action Saturday, July 18, at home against the Orlando Pride (6:45 p.m., ION).
