Photos: Motorless vehicles mix speed and silliness at Red Bull Soapbox Race at the Utah Capitol

In a first-of-its-kind event for Utah, some 45 teams were selected to brave a downhill course loaded with jumps and twists

Dozens of four-wheeled contraptions braved a twisty downhill course at the Utah Capitol on Saturday, for the first Utah edition of the Red Bull Soapbox Race.

Some 45 teams were selected out of 400 applicants to build and drive their non-motorized custom-made vehicles, which were rated on their speed through the course and on their creativity.

The all-Utah judging panel featured car designers Dave Kindig and Kevin Schiele, skydiver Mike Brewer, comedian Tyler Bender, Mayci J. Neeley from the reality show “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” and Olympic climber Natalia Grossman.
