Bowling Green hires Southern Utah basketball coach

The Thunderbirds went 22-12 this season and made the WAC title game.

Southern Utah basketball coach Todd Simon is leaving Cedar City to become the head coach at Bowling Green.

“It was an honor and privilege to serve Southern Utah University for the past 7 years,” Simon said in a prepared statement Wednesday. “My family and I have also grown our family here and built lifelong relationships.”

Simon took over the Thunderbirds in 2016 after finishing the previous season as UNLV’s interim coach. During his time at SUU, Simon amassed a 116-106 record.

“The entire Southern Utah University and Cedar City community will miss Todd and Katie Simon and their children. We thank them for their service to our student-athletes, athletic department, and university,” SUU athletics director Doug Knuth said in a statement. “While we will miss them as colleagues and friends, we wish them all the best in their return to the midwest and know they will be SUU fans and friends for life.”

SUU went 22-12 this season, falling to Grand Canyon in the Western Athletic Conference’s championship game.

The Thunderbirds will play host to the North Alabama Lions in the College Basketball Invitational tournament Saturday.
