Lake Buena Vista, Fla. • Chris Mueller scored twice in the opening 10 minutes and Orlando City won its second game of the MLS is Back Tournament, beating New York City FC 3-1 Tuesday night.
Mueller got his first in the fourth minute, scoring on a free kick from Joao Moutinho that never hit the ground. He added a second goal in the 10th minute to give Orlando a 2-0 lead. Mueller has three goals in the tournament.
NYCFC got a goal from Jesus Medina in the first half but couldn’t overcome the deficit and Orlando’s Tesho Akindele scored late to seal it.
Orlando City was coming off a 2-1 victory over Inter Miami in the tournament opener. Nani scored the game winner in stoppage time.
NYCFC lost 1-0 to the Philadelphia Union in its opening match of the tournament. The loss was all the more disheartening because Maxi Morales, the league’s assist leader last season, sustained a quad injury and could miss several weeks.
Union 2, Inter Miami 1 • Kacper Przybylko scored in the 63rd minute and the Philadelphia Union held off Inter Miami for a victory on Tuesday night.
It was Union’s second win in two games in the World Cup-style tournament played without fans at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports complex at Walt Disney World. The victory secured a spot in the knockout round.
Kai Wagner put Philadelphia up early with a goal in the fifth minute, a blast from distance that went into the far corner. But Inter Miami equalized in the 36th minute with Rodolfo Pizarro’s goal that bounced over sliding Union goalkeeper Andre Blake.
On the counter, Brenden Aaronson found Przybylko, who cut to the inside against a Miami defender and deftly scored to give the Union back the lead.
Video review was used to overturn a handball call on Philadelphia in the penalty area that would have given Miami a good change to pull even in the 75th minute. Roman Torres’ attempted header for Miami in the 83rd minute caromed off the crossbar.
It was the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
