American Fork, Timpanogos claim Last Chance tourney titles

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) Fans practice social distancing as Copper Hills faces Syracuse High School in the Last Chance Baseball Tournament at Lone Peak High School in Highland on Friday, May 29, 2020.

Two Utah high school baseball teams were crowned champions at the inaugural Last Chance Tournament on Saturday.

American Fork took the 6A championship, beating Riverton 8-7. The Cavemen had to come form behind to win the title game.

Timpanogos narrowly beat Salem Hills 9-8 for the 5A championship later in the evening, also having to stage a comeback late in the game.

The two-week tournament was put on after the Utah High School Activities Association canceled spring sports in the state due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Players, coaches and spectators expressed confidence at the start of the tournament that no one was in too much danger of getting the coronavirus.
